Young People Learn about Healthy Relationships
Downpatrick, Rowallane, and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums, in association with the South Eastern Domestic & Sexual Violence Partnership, have taken a creative approach to helping young people understand what is, and what is not, acceptable in a relationship.
The initiative, supported by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, comes as the Council marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which takes place in November.
Over 100 14 to16 year-olds from across the district took part in an interactive ‘Mentimeter’ Quiz at Downpatrick Omniplex Cinema which outlined what words and actions were acceptable in a loving relationship and highlighted those that were not acceptable. The quiz was followed by a showing of the latest Will Smith film, Gemini Man.
This innovative project was designed to respond effectively to the rising problem of ‘sexting’ and sharing of inappropriate images over social media, and the possible long-term consequences. The scheme also examines issues around control, where constant texts, calls and snapchat messages can be perceived as caring but can slip into controlling where a partner goes and who they see.
After taking part in this project, the young people will be armed with the necessary tools to recognize when something is wrong and how to get themselves out of the situation.
Patricia McMurray from the South Eastern Domestic & Sexual Violence Partnership said, “We want our young people to enjoy their lives and relationships free from danger of control or abuse and this project will equip them will the necessary information to prevent them becoming victims or perpetrators.
“The rise in sharing of images/clips on social media is concerning if these are used to control or embarrass someone and it can have a devasting impact. Education on what is acceptable in a relationship and what is not is paramount to ensure not only the emotional but physical safety of our young people and I welcome this joint initiative.”
