Winner of the Down Summer Trophy Golf Tournament Announced
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council was delighted to announce that Pat Curtis from Gort Golf Club, County Clare was the winner of the Down Summer Trophy at a reception evening held in the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa on Friday 12 August.
The Down Summer Trophy is one of Northern Ireland’s longest running and most prestigious international amateur tournaments. The tournament was established to position the golf tourism product of County Down internationally. The concept being to promote international golf travel to both the premium links courses and the top championship parkland golf courses across the district.
Sponsored by House of Waterford Crystal, the magnificent Down Summer Golf Tournament Trophy is made of hand cut Waterford Crystal and a special thanks to David McCoy, Director of Sales, House of Waterford Crystal was made at the winner reception for their kind support.
The Down Summer Golf Tournament was a Singles Stableford based on cumulative scores and was played over three golf courses in County Down, Spa Golf Club, Ardglass Golf Links and Royal County Down Golf Club - host venue of the 2015 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
Over one hundred and forty golfers from England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland, Spain, United States of America and Australia competed in the tournament and enjoyed the magnificent landscapes of County Down together with great hospitality.
Speaking about the tournament Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Cllr Gillian Fitzpatrick said,
“On behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, I am delighted to announce the winner of this event to be Pat Curtis from Gort, County Clare. The golfers enjoyed a real test this week at Spa Golf Club, Ardglass Golf Links and Royal County Down Golf Club. We are delighted to welcome the competitors who have travelled from overseas to compete and we would wish them a safe return home.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council established this tournament to support the long term growth and development of golf tourism within the district and the wider County Down area.
Golf tourism generates £33 million per annum to the local economy here in Northern Ireland. Tourism Northern Ireland hopes to grow the value of golf tourism to £50 million a year by 2020 and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council wish to play our part in supporting this target goal. As such, we look forward to contributing to the growth and development of golf tourism in County Down by supporting the hosting of such significant international events.”
