Waves of fun at World Oceans Day celebration!
Want to know more about our oceans and have fun while doing it? On Saturday 6th June bring the whole family along to a celebration of World Oceans Day at Annalong Community Centre from 12-4pm.
World Oceans Day, held every year on the 8th June, is the UN recognised day of ocean celebration and action. People all over the world organise celebrations to support action to protect the ocean. This year, the theme is Healthy oceans, healthy planet, and a special effort is being made to stop plastic pollution.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will be joined by Ulster Wildlife and others to showcase the wonders of our seas. Get up close and personal with life-size models of some of our ocean giants, go on a rock pool ramble or check out our coastal species at the marine life pool. For those of you who want to be pampered, a seaweed hand spa is definitely recommended, while the kids get their face painted or take part in the arts and crafts. There really will be fun for all the family!
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Naomi Bailie said, “The Council understand the importance of our marine and coastal environments and is committed to protecting them. I would encourage everyone to visit Annalong Community Centre on Saturday 6th and take part in all of the fun activities planned. It will be a great opportunity to learn a bit more about our oceans and the little things we can do to help conserve them for the future”.
The Living Seas Officer at Ulster Wildlife Dave Wall added, ‘Ulster Wildlife’s vision is for Living Seas, where marine wildlife thrives, from the depths of the ocean to the coastal shallows. An essential part of this vision is to encourage local communities to become aware of the rich diversity of marine life on their doorsteps’.
