Visitor Experience Q&As

Q: Will visitors be allowed out of the visitor centre?

A: It is the aspiration of the project to allow visitors who wish to access the Mournes from the visitor centre to be able to do so in a controlled manner. The details of how this can be done – without impacting on the environment – will be considered as part of the stakeholder engagement process, the Visitor Management Plan and as the Environment Impact Assessment is undertaken over the coming months.

Q: How will the project ensure that it is as accessible and inclusive as possible?

A: The Mourne Mountains Gateway Project is committed to becoming an accessible destination for all visitors, regardless of physical limitations. This includes the development of inclusive infrastructure, such as fully accessible pathways, gondola cabins designed to accommodate, for example, wheelchairs and prams, and facilities that meet the highest standards of universal design.

In addition, visitor services will be enhanced by clear information, accessible orientation and staff training, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the area comfortably and safely. The project also plans to offer inclusive programming, such as sensory-friendly tours and specialised visitor services to cater to diverse needs.

Q: How will weather and seasonal factors impact the gondola’s operation?

A: The project development process will consider and review a range of gondola operating systems available and appropriate to the project.  While occasional high winds or severe weather may temporarily affect operations, gondola systems are engineered to operate safely under a wide range of conditions. Gondola systems worldwide are designed to withstand high winds, heavy snowfall and extreme cold, and these systems have proven to be reliable even in the most challenging environments.

Q: How will the project improve visitor management in the Mournes?

A: The project will incorporate a comprehensive Visitor Management Plan to enhance the overall experience for all visitors to the Mournes while safeguarding the natural environment. This plan will explore the potential for improved infrastructure, such as upgraded trails and facilities as well as increased services to guide and assist visitors. The extent of the access will be developed in partnership with key stakeholders, for example, Mourne Heritage Trust and the National Trust, to determine the appropriate balance for the site and the wider Mournes area.

Q: What educational opportunities will the project offer?

A: The project will offer various educational opportunities to enrich visitors' understanding of the area's natural and cultural heritage. A central feature will be a visitor centre with interactive exhibits that explore the geology, ecosystems and cultural significance of the Mourne Mountains. These exhibits will be designed to engage visitors of all ages, making learning both accessible and enjoyable.

Additionally, we are reviewing the possibility of the project including guided tours, focusing on conservation efforts and sustainable tourism. There is an ambition that workshops and educational programmes will be developed in collaboration with local schools and universities, providing hands-on learning experiences about the region's ecology and heritage.
