Upwards on 200 signed up for firmus energy Newry City Triathlon – so far!
With just over two months to go to the hotly anticipated firmus energy Newry City Triathlon, which will take place on Sunday 30 August 2015, organisers are urging people of all abilities to sign-up and give it a ‘tri’! Following last year’s extremely successful event, upwards on 200 have already registered for the 2015 race with demand expected to soar over the coming weeks as the event draws closer.
Organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, this is the second year of triathlon which will also see a newly introduced Border Man Half Iron Distance Event take place on the same day. It sure to be a day for all the family with the council’s Festival of Water also returning along with the Tri-Kid event which encourages the children to become involved in the sport.
Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Naomi Bailie said:
“My Council is delighted to be associated with these prestigious sporting events which will bring hundreds of athletes to Newry City along with thousands of spectators. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking our title sponsor firmus energy for their continued sponsorship and also O’Brien Sandwich Café Newry and wish the events every success”
Angeline Murphy from firmus energy commented: “We are delighted to continue our support for the event again this year and are looking forward to even more participants signing up, bringing many new visitors to the City.
“The firmus energy Newry City Triathlon is regarded as the fastest sprint triathlon in Ireland and is a great opportunity for triathletes to achieve personal bests due to the fast, flat route of the race as well as being a fun course for novices. Also, it is not every day that people get the chance to swim in the Canal!
“firmus energy has been working in the Newry area since 2007 and has connected around 2,000 business and residential customers to natural gas. We work hard to become involved in the communities that we serve and supporting this Triathlon is just one of the ways we are giving back to the Newry area.
“We look forward to working closely with the Council and building on the success of last year’s firmus energy City of Newry Triathlon – we would urge people to register as soon as possible to ensure they secure a space on one of the most sought after triathlons in NI!”
The firmus energy City of Newry Triathlon will begin with a 750m swim starting from the Albert Basin, followed by a 20KM cycle on the even, level course taking in the Warrenpoint Road and culminating in a five KM route around the City.
The practice swims will start mid July, details of which will appear on the Council’s and firmus energy facebook pages.
Paddy Duffy, Event Race Director stated that this year’s event promises to live up to its reputation of being the fastest spring triathlon in Ireland, and he also advised that the Borderman event will provide a great challenge to the experience tri-athletes who will be taking part. Entries are also high for this event at this stage.
People interested in taking part and fees can find out more and register through the race’s dedicated website, www.firmusenergynewrycitytriathlon.com, up until 31st July, 2015.
