On Tuesday 25 March 2025, members of St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club, Crossmaglen, visited the Downshire Civic Centre in Downpatrick to meet with the Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Pete Byrne.
The visit was arranged following a request from the youth club, whose members expressed a keen interest in learning more about civic life and gaining a deeper understanding of local democracy.
As part of the visit, the young people had the unique opportunity to hold their event in the Council Chamber, where they took part in a Q&A session focused on the role of local government, the decision-making process, and how Council policies impact communities across the district.
Chairperson Councillor Pete Byrne praised the group for their enthusiasm and engagement, encouraging them to remain active participants in civic life. He said, “It’s inspiring to see young people taking such an active interest in how local government works. Your voices matter, and your ideas are vital to shaping the future of our district.”
