Spectacular Happenings in Newry City for all the Family this Mid Term
With Autumn upon us, in the first weekend of November Newry City will host two Newry Mourne and Down flagship Taste the Island events with the return of the ever popular Twilight Market and ‘Swingin’ Wartime Revue’ event.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey said, “This Twilight Market provides a wonderful opportunity for our local food and drink producers to showcase their finest offerings within our district. With gates opening at 5pm, I encourage you to arrive early and sample the wide variety of treats on offer before making your way to find
the perfect viewing spot to enjoy the fireworks. It is set to be a fantastic evening for all the family.
“Back by popular demand on the Saturday evening, and as part of the Late Shift NI programme of events, Bagenal’s Castle will come to life after dark with the Swingin’ Wartime Revue. Inspired by the new temporary exhibition in Newry and Mourne Museum on World War Two and the Revue concerts held in the 1940s, this step back in time is one not to be missed. Last year’s event was such a success we would recommend that you book your ticket now to avoid disappointment.”
On Friday 1 November from 5pm, the Twilight Market located in Newry Variety Market, John Mitchel Place will be transformed into a food and drink heaven, where visitors will be able to sample the unique food and drink offerings available across the region.
Visit the stalls at the Twilight Market where you can purchase affordable artisan goods or simply indulge in the creations of the local food and drink producers. With fun for all the family, the Twilight Market will host a range of fabulous free fun activities to keep everyone entertained with face painting, arts and crafts, street performers and live music.
Make your way to Fathom Line at 8pm for our ‘Fireworks Frenzy’, to view an array of dazzling colours, laser beams and rockets across the skies of Newry City. After a spectacular show, enjoy more live music and entertainment at the Market until 10pm. Please be advised children are not permitted into the Market after 9pm.
For Saturday’s Swingin’ Wartime Revue, don your vintage finery and join us for a 1940s style cabaret and knees-up in Newry and Mourne Museum, Bagenal's Castle. Doors open from 6.30pm and we invite you to enjoy a drink in our on-site bar, take a walk around the castle and check out our retro cabaret performances.
Discover Taste the Island further as you explore the rest of the museum by uncovering food and drink tastings, music and surprise performances straight from a Pathé newsreel. This event is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Tourism NI and Department for Communities.
Inspired by wartime concerts held in Newry during the 1940s, The Swingin’ Wartime Revue, part of the Late Shift, is a series of after dark happenings in museums across Northern Ireland this autumn. Hidden histories are revealed after dark, with music, magic, comedy and unique, one-off experiences. Check out our website for the full programme; visit: www.visitmournemountains.co.uk/lates.
Tickets are priced at £10 per person. The Swingin’ Wartime Revue is a strictly over-18s event.
