Special Send-off for Newry City AFC Special Olympics Club
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin held a reception for Newry City AFC Special Olympics Club as they prepared to take part in the Special Olympics Ireland Games at Canal Court Hotel & Spa on Thursday 14 June 2018.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “I am delighted to meet all the athletes and coaches before they set off to take part in this important competition. The games, which were held on 14-17 June in Dublin, provided an opportunity for Ulster athletes to compete against others from around the world, in a range of sporting activities.
Cllr Murnin continued, “The Newry City AFC Special Olympics Club has the largest delegation from Ulster taking part in the Games with 21 athletes and seven coaches. It’s a great honour for any athlete to participate in these games and represent not only their club, but the whole Newry, Mourne and Down District, as well as their Province.”
Cllr Murnin concluded, “I especially wanted to pay tribute to all those coaches and volunteer who give their time throughout the year to train our athletes. They are the lifeblood of the Special Olympics, without their dedication none of this would be possible.”
