Special Olympic Medal Winners Honoured by Council Chairman
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin, hosted a reception on Thursday 4 April to honour four local Special Olympics medal winners.
The young people were part of a 91-strong squad of Special Olympics athletes from across Ireland who participated in the 2019 World Games in Abu Dhabi in March.
Peadar Connolly, Fergal Gregory and Connor McClorey, all members of Newry AFC Special Olympics Club, picked up medals in backstroke, kayaking and open water swimming respectively, and Megan McElherron from Saddles and Reins in Bessbrook, won equestrian medals.
Speaking about their successes, Chairman, Councillor Murnin said, “I am very pleased and honoured to host this event in honour of our four local heroes – Connor, Fergal, Megan and Peadar. It was with great pride and delight that my Council learned that each athlete earned a podium place following their outstanding performances in Abu Dhabi - their outstanding achievements have put our district on the map.
“Every day these athletes train and strive to achieve their very best and the months of hard work, in preparation for the world games, has been worth it. However, without the dedication of coaches and parents, the Special Olympics would not exist as we know it today. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation of their commitment to these wonderful, young ambassadors of our district.
“The benefits of taking part in Special Olympics extend far beyond the physical benefits of sport, it’s all about team spirit, friendship and fun!”
