Show a Bit of Love for the Birds in Your Life
The Ring of Gullion team is marking this Valentine’s Day with an invitation to show a little love for our local birds.
The team is hosting a Nest Box Building Workshop on Saturday 17 February from 2pm-4pm as part of National Nest Box Week, which begins on 14 February. All those attending the workshop will get a chance to make their very own nest box to encourage more birds into their garden.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “National Nest Box Week is an initiative run by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), which aims to encourage everyone to put up nest boxes in their local area in order to promote and enhance biodiversity and conservation of our breeding birds and wildlife.”
“We are delighted to support this initiative through the Nest Box Building Workshop. Natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. Taking part in National Nest Box Week gives you the chance to contribute to bird conservation whilst giving you the pleasure of observing any breeding birds that you attract to your nest box.”
Councillor Mulgrew added, “It is time we remind ourselves to give courting birds a warm, secure home for raising the next generation.”
