Schools Gear Up for Bikeability Cycle Training
As part of the NI Festival of Cycling 2016, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is working in conjunction with Sustrans to provide ‘Bikeability’ cycle training, which kicked off on Monday 6 June at Carrick Primary School, Burren.
Carrick is one of six local primary schools involved in the scheme, selected due to their location along the Giro Gran Fondo route. Children taking part learned skills in cycling proficiency designed to give them confidence to safely ride their bikes on today’s potentially dangerous roads.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “This training is a great opportunity for school children to learn how to stay safe while on their bikes. It is also an excellent way to promote cycling in the Newry, Mourne and Down area alongside the exciting programme of cycling events that are taking place this month throughout the district between the 3 to 19 June.”
Other events planned as part of the NI Festival of Cycling include the Irish Downhill Mountain Bike Series at Rostrevor Trails; IN THE RED, a mountain bike sportive encompassing the 'Red Loop' trial in Kilbroney Park; PSYCLE, an eight hour mountain bike endurance event at Castlewellan Mountain Bike Trails; Giro Juniors Event at the Albert Basin in Newry and the Crooked Lake Duathalon at Camlough Lake.
