Public Consultation Opens for Warrenpoint Breakwater Upgrade Scheme

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has announced the opening of a Public Consultation process regarding a proposed upgrade scheme for Warrenpoint Breakwater.

This consultation follows closely on the back of the previously completed Public Consultation process for the adjacent Warrenpoint Front Shore Public Realm Scheme earlier this year. While the Front Shore Scheme is now about to go through the planning process, the Council is now encouraging members of the public to view these separate Breakwater proposals and provide feedback.

The proposed works will extend from the Breakwater entrance at Osbourne Terrace to the end of the structure overlooking the shipping channel and comprise of:

• a replacement of lighting columns which are either missing, damaged and weather beaten
• a replacement of street furniture including bins and benches
• enhancement of the existing entrance area to increase its pedestrian connectivity and flexibility of use
• provision of lettable kiosk/vendor space to enhance the provision for users of the Front Shore
• improvement of pedestrian linkages along the Breakwater through replacement of the existing surface.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said, “This scheme represents an opportunity to build on the already consulted Front Shore Public Realm proposals and provide a much needed and long overdue facelift to the Warrenpoint Breakwater.

“Both the Breakwater and overall Front Shore proposals would transform the town of Warrenpoint for both locals and visitors given its beautiful setting on the shores of Carlingford Lough.”
