Press Statement – Active Travel Initiatives
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council elected members and officials had a very positive and productive meeting with Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Minister Mallon and the new Walking and Cycling Champion, to discuss proposals for a range of active travel initiatives in Newry city.
Council Chairperson, Councillor Laura Devlin said, “We are very grateful to the Minister for taking time to meet with local representatives to discuss how we can progress a range of measures in Newry city to deliver schemes that will provide safe walking routes, cycle routes and space to ensure social distancing in the centre of the city. We have agreed that officials from the Council and DfI will continue to work closely together with local elected members, the local community and businesses to develop viable schemes to deliver real benefits to Newry city, both in the short and long term.”
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said, “I am committed to working towards re-imagining and reshaping our spaces to accommodate cycling, walking and active travel as part of an ambitious green recovery plan. We have a real opportunity to build a better future that delivers more for our citizens, socially and economically, delivering cleaner, greener and healthier communities. I am committed to working hand in hand with Council and the local community to ensure that Newry gets to build a better way out of recovery.”
