Orangefield Flute Band Honoured at Civic Reception by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, welcomed members of the Orangefield Flute Band, Kilkeel, to a special civic reception at the Council offices on Monaghan Row, Newry, on Wednesday 16 April.

The event celebrated the band’s exceptional recent success at the Flute Band Association of Northern Ireland’s Own Choice contest in Bangor, where they claimed first place in Grade 2 and received the prestigious Interpretation Prize.

Speaking at the reception, Chairperson Councillor Pete Byrne said, “It is an honour to formally recognise the band’s outstanding achievement. You are not only champions in this competition, but also wonderful ambassadors for our area and your contribution has helped to promote the cultural heritage of the Mournes.”

He highlighted the band’s popularity in the local area and its positive influence on younger generations who have gained formal music qualifications through their involvement with the band. Some have even gone on to become professional music tutors, contributing to the growth and enrichment of the wider community. Chairperson Councillor Byrne said, “I hope your success inspires many more young people to explore and embrace our shared culture and identity. The workshops you offer, delivered by highly skilled and experienced tutors, give young people an invaluable opportunity to develop their musical abilities in a supportive and structured environment.”

In closing, Chairperson Councillor Byrne expressed the Council’s pride in the band’s achievements, he said, “The Council and your community are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved. Your dedication and passion for music are truly inspirational. I wish you every success in future endeavours.”

To commemorate the occasion, the Chairperson presented a crystal bowl to Orangefield Flute Band in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
