Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Rewards Recycling

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has rewarded a number of residents of the district who recycle their waste correctly at Household Recycling Centres though a a competition sponsored by REGEN Waste.

Recycling customers who had their waste pre-sorted for recycling were entered into a draw for a prize of £50. One customer from each of the ten centres was then picked randomly to receive the prize.

Visitors to the centres also received spot prizes and had the opportunity at find out more about recycling by chatting to the officers. The Council also held a competition on social media that helped spread the message of the benefits of recycling which saw hundreds of people enter. The eventual winner was Anne Smith, who won the fantastic prize of a kindle sponsored by ERP recycling.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “Household Recycling Centres contribute to around 40% of the District’s recycling rate, so it is important that they are used correctly. At each of the sites it is possible to recycle over twenty different types of waste including wood, metal, greenwaste and electrical goods, and in order to achieve a recycling rate of 50% by 2020 the Council needs to focus on increasing recycling at these centres. I would like to thank those who are already recycling and encourage everyone to make an effort to recycle more.”

Rachel Morgan from REGEN waste said, “Congratulations to everyone who took part, REGEN were happy to sponsor this competition and hope that it will help raise awareness to the comprehensive recycling facilities we have around the Newry, Mourne and Down District.”
