Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Announces New Junior Summer Golf Trophy
From Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 August 2018 junior golfers will tee off at a new competition, the Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Golf Trophy.
The competition will be open to beginner, advanced and elite golfers, and prizes will be awarded in three categories; under 18, under 16 and under 14. Participants will play Kilkeel and Warrenpoint Golf Clubs, with the opportunity to qualify to play Royal County Down.
This exciting initiative has been organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in conjunction with the Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch), Irish Ladies Golfing Union Ltd (Northern District), Royal County Down, and Warrenpoint and Kilkeel Golf Clubs.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council supports the development of junior golf and golf tourism in the north of Ireland”.
Councillor Mulgrew continued, “The Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Golf Trophy is an exciting new tournament that will be competitive, challenging and fun for junior golfers. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the region and to attract junior golfers from the island of Ireland and beyond. I hope to see the Junior Trophy established as an annual event.”
Warrenpoint Golf Club is an 18 hole parkland course situated in an area renowned for its natural beauty. Surrounded by the Mourne Mountains and Carlingford Lough, it is ranked as one of the top Parkland Courses in Northern Ireland.
Kilkeel Golf Club is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, situated at the foot of the Mourne Mountains and opened its 18 hole championship course in 1993. This course is suitable for golfers of all abilities.
Both clubs are delighted to support the 2018 Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Trophy and have a proud history in developing junior golfers.
Royal County Down has played host to many great tournaments and is located in the beautiful Murlough Nature Reserve. It is currently ranked the number one course in the world by Golf Digest and was the venue for the 2015 Irish Open.
The Newry, Mourne and Down Summer Trophy will also run alongside this exciting new junior competition and will play Spa/St Patrick’s golf club, Ardglass golf club and Royal County Down on 15 to 17 August 2018.
