Newcastle Resident Wins December Recycler of the Month

James Brown from Newcastle is this month’s Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Recycler of the Month. Congratulations to James who has won a £50 prize.

James was congratulated for having a flawless blue bin that contained no contamination. James’s bin was filled with all the various materials that can be recycled in the blue bin including paper, cardboard, food/drink cans, bottles and cartons. All the material in the blue bin was clean, dry and loose and ready for sorting.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Naomi Bailie said, “When searching for the winner we are looking for a bin that contains cardboard, although heavy cardboard must be ripped up, paper except for envelopes, shredded paper and tissues, plastic bottles (no plastic other than bottles), cans including food and aerosols and tinfoil. Please remember you can now recycle ‘tetra pack’ which are the waxed juice or soup beverage cartons”

Cllr Bailie added, “People throughout the District are increasingly aware of which items belong in the blue recycling bins, but there are still some unwanted items which the Council cannot recycle that slip through the net. These include takeaway food boxes as they contain dirt and grease, paper tissue, plastic bags, polystyrene and food wrappers”

Please be advised any bins containing the incorrect items will be not be emptied.

Tetra pack Cartons are 100% recyclable and are made from high quality wood fibres which are strong and flexible. When recycled they can be made into new products such as roof tiles or building panels.
