Newcastle and the Mourne area shortlisted for Northern Ireland’s Best Places Competition
Newcastle and the Mourne area has been shortlisted for Northern Ireland’s Best Places Competition.
The Competition celebrates Northern Ireland’s most attractive and inspiring places and the role planners have played in helping to protect or shape them for communities across Northern Ireland.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “I am thrilled that Newcastle and the Mourne area has been shortlisted for Northern Ireland’s Best Place award. This area appeals to everyone and Newcastle has a long history of being a summer holiday resort and a day-trip location for short visits. Newcastle is also a gateway to the Mournes and Ring of Gullion destination experience and has gained international recognition as the setting for the Royal County Down Golf Club.
Cllr Mulgrew continued, “The well-recognised backdrop of this area has been made famous by the lyrics of Percy French: “…where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea“, and the nature of the Mourne Coast can be appreciated through its unique composite of topographies, fishing villages, wildlife, scenic beauty plus opportunities for outdoor adventure and cultural heritage experiences. I would encourage everyone in the district and beyond to vote for Newcastle and the Mournes!”
Voting is open until Friday 20 October 2017 and the winner is due to be announced during November 2017.
