New Neighbourhood Watch Scheme for Dominican Quarter, Newry
Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), in conjunction with PSNI and the local community in Newry, is delighted to set up a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in the Newry’s Dominican Quarter.
The local residents raised concerns regarding issues such as anti-social behaviour, burglary and a general fear of crime, and with the support from PSNI and PCSP the residents were empowered to set up this Neighbourhood Watch Scheme taking in the areas of Dominic St, Pool Lane, Thomas St and Bridge Street.
PCSP Chairperson, Councillor Terry Hearty said, “Neighbourhood Watch is a partnership between local communities, PSNI and PCSP’s. Neighbourhood Watch raises awareness of crime, keeps communities informed and encourages local residents to report activity in their neighbourhood, which is suspicious or disruptive. It is also about bringing people closer together by developing a stronger community spirit. We are delighted to be able to support Dominican Quarter’s new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, this scheme aims to promote confidence within communities that something positive can be done to prevent local crime and improve the quality of life in the area.”
Ryan Duffy, Community Planning Sergeant, PSNI said, “We understand that crime can be frightening and isolating, and we want to empower local residents to play their part in keeping their own neighbourhood safe. Anyone can belong to a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and play a part in its achievements. We have seen how successful we can be when we work in partnership with the community.”
Both PCSP and PSNI would like to encourage more people in many areas across Newry, Mourne and Down to set up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. The scheme can cover just one street, part or all of an estate and requires a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator. The coordinator acts as a link between the community and local police and they are the first point of contact for all members of the scheme to receive and distribute information. We would encourage any member of the public who is interested in working with us to reduce crime in their area to contact either PCSP or their local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
