New Exhibition Opened at Down County Museum
A new exhibition, ‘Essence of Form’, which highlights the best of Down County Museum’s applied art collection, has been officially opened.
‘Essence of Form’provides visitors with the chance to see some of the most interesting examples of work made by artists living and working in County Down. On display are examples of striking and quirky ceramics, high fashion and traditionally made pieces of jewellery, textile pieces from batiks to silk screen printed images, beautiful and functional samples of wood turning and much more.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane said, “I am delighted to open this exhibition at the Museum. The exhibition is a wonderfully colourful and interesting display of important local work and it provides a great opportunity for visitors to see a unique part of the Museum’s collection. I hope as many people as possible will visit it over the next few months.”
Down County Museum’s applied art collection, which has been built up over the past 25 years, is vital to the overall collection and plays an important role in the recording of the artistic and cultural life of the area. It features the work of some of the best known artists in the County as well as objects made by up and coming young artists. The Museum seeks to collect contemporary items like these to ensure that locally made works are preserved for the future.
The exhibition displays a diverse range of pieces together so that visitors can appreciate the wealth of talent represented in the Museum’s collection and highlights the contemporary work of a selection of local artists. The exhibition also features a selection photographs taken by the Museum’s photographer, Peadar Curran, which highlight the subtle details, patterns and textures found within the collection.
The exhibition will be on display until October 2016.
Down County Museum is open daily and admission to the exhibition is free.
