National Tree Week 2023
National Tree Week is an annual event, brought to you by The Tree Council and partners, dedicated to celebrating the importance of trees and tree care.
This year’s National Tree Week (November 25 – December 3) is extra special as it marks the 50th anniversary of the famous ‘Plant a Tree in 73’ campaign – from which The Tree Council was born! This year’s message is to Grow a Tree in 23! The crucial change in the wording – ‘grow’ instead of ‘plant’ – reflects the continued care trees need after planting to ensure they thrive, to become the carbon-guzzling, wildlife supporting, wellbeing enhancing, mature specimens that deliver so many benefits in our urban and rural environments.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council recognises the importance of trees and have recently developed a Tree Strategy to protect and enhance tree cover for future generations. Council acknowledges that trees not only greatly enhance the visual amenity of our environment, but they are also vital for people’s sense of well-being and contribute to everyone’s quality of life.
Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale AONBs are currently running a free tree scheme for schools, youth groups, community groups and landowners. Children and adults throughout the country are invited to make their mark this February by planting 10,000 trees as part of the scheme. Closing date for expressions of interest for the free tree giveaway is 31st December 2023.
