Mourne Mountains Awarded 'Best View'
The Mourne Mountains have been voted the nation’s favourite view after receiving over a third of the votes in a major survey undertaken by the ‘Countryman Magazine’. The winning view was the Mournes, as seen from the shoreline of Tyrella Beach.
A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Mournes are a favourite for local hikers and adventurous tourists visiting the Newry, Mourne and Down District. The highest peak in the North of Ireland beat of competition from various stunning locations from across the UK including Snowdonia in Wales and the Lake District in Cumbria.
Speaking regarding the recent vote Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane said, “This is a fantastic vote of confidence in the tourism resources our District has to offer. The Mourne Mountains provides a fabulous resource for walking and a wide range of outdoor activities. In addition to providing a great outdoor playground the Mournes have influenced author CS Lewis as he wrote his children’s book series ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, has inspired musicians with songs such as Percy French’s ‘The Mountains of Mourne’ and more recently played host to the world wide hit fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones’.”
This vote will continue to raise awareness of the spectacular backdrop the Mournes provides to the fabulous coastline which is home to a diverse range of towns and villages providing a wealth of tourism opportunities to visitors to the district.
