Mainstay DRP Local Heroes Celebrated in Awards

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Willie Clarke hosted the Mainstay DRP Local Hero Awards on Friday 23 March at the Downshire Civic Centre. A range of businesses attended the event, all of which were nominated by the charity’s clients and included restaurants, cafes and hairdressers.  

The reception was held to recognise the on-going partnership between Mainstay DRP and local businesses to provide a sustainable living environment which allows Mainstay DRP’s clients to live independently in the Downpatrick community.

Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Willie Clarke said, “I am delighted to be able to host this important event. Mainstay DRP is an invaluable service within our district, providing a range of quality care and support service for people with learning disabilities. This local charity can ensure that lifelong care is available and enable individuals to have greater choice and influence over where and how they live. The charity’s work helps to cultivate greater independence and develop skills for those with a disability within a structured, caring environment. 

“I would like to thank each and every one of the businesses for going the extra mile in supporting the charity and ensuring everyone is able to integrate fully into their community. I would also like to extend warm congratulations to all the winners.”

Mainstay DRP Chief Executive Officer, Helen Owen said, “These businesses provide such excellent services and support to our charity’s clients. It is wonderful that we are able to recognise and reward them for their outstanding efforts. Congratulations to all the winners. We are looking forward to continuing to work alongside them in the future.”

This awards event was Downpatrick’s first ceremony celebrating local businesses that provide the best possible services to people with learning disabilities. The winners of the five categories were:

Best Hair and Beauty - McCartan's
Best Bar - Murphy's Bar
Best Café - Cathedral View Tea Rooms
Most Accessible - Milligan Oil Fuels
