Chairperson Welcomes Maidens To Council Chamber
On Wednesday 10 August, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick welcomed the Maidens from the ‘Maiden of the Mournes Festival’ to Bagenals Castle for a tour of Newry and Mourne Museum.
Councillor Fitzpatrick expressed her appreciation of the work which the organising Committee carry out on a voluntary basis to create an imaginative, innovative and appealing programme of events which appeals to all sections of the local community and to visitors to the area.
Councillor Fitzpatrick said, “One of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s key strategic objectives is to promote the district as a premier tourism destination on the island of Ireland and the work of local groups, such as the Maiden of the Mournes Festival Committee, is vital in helping the Council achieve this objective. The Council is delighted to be a sponsor of this event which showcases one of the most scenic areas of the district.”
Councillor Fitzpatrick presented the Maidens with a small gift to commemorate their visit and hosted them to lunch, during which she took the opportunity to speak informally with the Maidens. She wished all an enjoyable stay in the district, and said she would encourage them, together with their families and friends, to make further visits to Warrenpoint and the many other scenic areas within the Newry, Mourne and Down District.
