Magical ‘Elf’ theme for Christmas tree switch on in Downpatrick
Downpatrick will sparkle on Friday 27 November for the annual Christmas tree lights switch on in St Patrick Square as part of the Christkindl ‘Elf’ theme event. The event which has been running successfully for years, will not fail to disappoint as St Patrick Square get set to jingle with Carol Singing, Food Market, Inflatable Snow Globe and Snow Man from 5pm.
Santa will lead the popular enchanting lantern parade from Down Arts Centre at 6pm with local school children, Downpatrick Hospital pipe band, bouncy elves and the Ice King and Snow Queen. You will be left mesmerised as you watch Market Street light up with the fairy-tale lanterns designed by local primary school children.
Young children will be bursting with excitement as they get the opportunity to have their picture taken with Donald Duck and Daisy inside the charmed Snow Globe and then will be bouncing with joy inside the inflatable Snow Man. As they get tired from all the excitement they can relax and build up their energy again by having their face painted, participating in the arts workshop designing their own very own festive photo frame or getting balloons modelled into their favourite character. As families wait for the exciting Christmas tree switch on and fireworks finale they will have the opportunity to buy some tasty local drinks and cuisine from the food market.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council Chairperson, Councillor Naomi Bailie said, “Downpatrick traders are busy preparing for the forthcoming Christmas season and I would encourage everyone to come out and support the local businesses in the run up to Christmas. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing loud for all to hear so I would encourage everyone to join in with St Patrick’s Grammar School and sing their favourite Christmas carols. This jovial period is a time for grown-ups to remember their magical childhood memories and I am sure I will not be the only one buzzing with excitement as we wait for the arrival of Santa to officially start the festive season in Downpatrick.”
Cllr Bailie added, "I'm particularly delighted as a Downpatrick Councillor to welcome this fantastic community festival back to the county town. Year on year it continues to grow and enhanced footfall in the town ensures Downpatrick remains a thriving high quality shopping experience coming up to Christmas. This year is set to see new additions to the programme and I'm really looking forward to welcoming everyone along to the magical switch on event."
