Local Primary Schools Dance to Fitness and Showcase Their Talents
Local primary school children have been enjoying a four week dance programme designed and delivered by Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area Forums (DEA).
The participating schools, which included Derryboy PS, Crossgar; St Mary’s PS, Saintfield; Cumran PS, Downpatrick; Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche, Castlewellan; St Patrick’s PS, Saul and St Malachy’s, Kilclief, came together in a showcase event in Down Leisure Centre on Friday 7 February 2020.
The local DEA Forums identified the need to develop a programme to engage young people who do not participate in mainstream sports activities. The project presented an opportunity for local school children to increase their fitness levels and gain confidence in their ability to dance and put on a show for their teachers.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey said, “I commend this excellent initiative provided by the three DEA’s, which allowed local children to participate in a fun activity to not only help their physical but also their mental health. The showcase event was a real highlight for the pupils and overall the initiative has had a transformative effect. I am delighted that some of the schools are now continuing with the programme.”
