Kickstart St Patrick’s Day with Legends of Folk Music at Down Arts Centre
Down Arts Centre is getting in the swing for St Patrick’s Day with a performance by McPeake which will be launching their debut album, ‘Gypsies in the Wood’ on Friday 15 March.
The group, which was formed by Francis McPeake IV, creates music that mixes instrumentals and heart-stirring lyrics with traditional instruments alongside contemporary song writing.
As the latest musician to come from a legendary musical family, often spoken of as folk royalty, Francis McPeake IV and the band combine tradition and innovation, weaving pop lyrics and radio friendly music using traditional instruments to create an eclectic combination of folk, Americana, traditional Irish and Indie music.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Mark Murnin said, “I am delighted that McPeake will be kicking off St Patrick’s weekend with a concert here at the Down Arts Centre. The music that the group creates is both new and familiar at the same time and will greatly add to the weekend’s festivities.
“Francis McPeake IV himself needs no introduction—the four generations of McPeakes have provided some of our most beloved tunes and songs. In fact, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ written by the first Francis McPeake, in 1948 has become one of the best loved folk songs and the McPeakes have influenced generations of musicians.
