Delamont Country Park Hosts Alps Life Run
A 10k Life Run will take place on Sunday 9 September in Delamont Country Park to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day. The run is sponsored by Rowallane District Electoral Area (DEA) forum in association with All Lives Are Precious (ALPS) and Downpatrick Boxing Academy.
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), which takes place on Monday 10 September 2018 is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Since 2003, WSPD has taken place on 10 September each year and serves as a call to action to individuals and organisations to prevent suicide. This year the theme is 'Take a minute, change a life’.
The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people take their own life each year–one person every 40 seconds, with up to 25 times as many again making a suicide attempt.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “Too many people have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who tried to take their own life and it is important to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
“This will be a great cross-community opportunity to raise awareness of the key issues of suicide and mental health in our society. The occasion promises to be a great fun event for all the family and I would encourage everyone to come along and take a minute to change their lives or that of someone else.”
For those daunted by a 10k race, there will also be a shorter 5k Fun Run and walk. Family members not taking part in the run can enjoy the free family fun day and party in the park with inflatable igloo, face painting, cartoon characters and disco. Everything kicks off at 11am with the Race commencing at 12noon.
Anyone interested in participating in the event can register now on the Atlas Running website www.atlasrunning.co.uk by clicking on the ALPS Life Run Delamont Country Park Sunday 9 September 2018.
