Delamont Country Park Development to be Progressed by Council
Funding to progress the creation of visitor facilities at Delamont Country Park that optimise its iconic Strangford Lough location has been approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
At a meeting of Council on 3 October, members agreed to approve a business case to progress development of the concept, design, outline business case and completion of PAD (Pre-Application Discussion) to assess Planning requirements.
The Council completed a Master plan for Delamont Country Park in 2019, envisaging it as a ‘Window on to Strangford Lough’. Key priorities included a visitor centre as focal point and a viewpoint which would maximise the Park’s location on the shores of Strangford Lough and provide an important reason to visit.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “Developing an iconic viewpoint site has the potential to create a truly unique stand
out visitor attraction at Delamont, elevating it to a must-see tourist attraction within the Council area.
“The panoramic views over the Mournes and Strangford Lough are fantastic at this location and creating iconic photo opportunities are key to raising the profile of tourist attractions and increasing visitor numbers. I look forward to learning more about the exciting plans for Delamont Country Park in the months to come.”
The concept, design and costing works will determine costs which will inform future funding applications for the project.
