Decade of Centenaries History Courses at Newry and Mourne Museum

Newry and Mourne Museum have developed a number of short courses for 2016 that examine some of the key events that form part of the decade of centenaries and commemorations currently being celebrated.

From 22 - 26 February from 3pm to 5pm there will be The Commemoration of Centenaries history course looking specifically at life at the beginning of the 20th century including; the lives of women, Easter 1916, The Somme, Trade Unions, and the working lives of people in Ireland 100 years ago.

There will also be an accredited OCN Level 2 course ‘From Home Rule to Partition in Ireland, 1886-1922’ from 7 – 11 March at 2pm to 5pm. Numbers are limited to 15.

This course will explore key social and economic conditions of the period and review the importance of Home Rule for Ireland. There will be an examination of what is meant by Unionism and Nationalism and how key events such as the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising impacted on both traditions.

Each workshop will be composed of inputs from tutors, discussion on key questions, exploration of artefacts, such as newspapers or photographs. A range of perspectives and factual information on each topic will be presented and explored.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Ruane stated that, “The talks organised by Newry and Mourne Museum offer an opportunity to those who never studied this period in Irish history a chance to learn more about the events that have shaped our history, the effects of which can still be felt today.”

No prior knowledge of history is required to attend any of these workshops and the courses are free of charge, but pre-booking of places is advisable.
