Danderball at St Colman’s Sports Complex
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have teamed up with Action Mental Health to bring the ‘Danderball Programme’ to St Colman’s Sports Complex.
The four week long project seen a number of over 50’s play various games of walking football in order to inspire them to keep active and exercise. Walking Football is a new phenomenon sweeping the country. The rules of walking football are much the same as its speedier cousin, however there are some differences. The squads are smaller (between five and seven-a-side), free kicks are indirect, kick-ins replace throws, there are no off sides, the ball must be kept below head height and, of course, anything so much as a jog is prohibited.
Action Mental Health operates from eleven locations throughout Northern Ireland and support over 2500 people each year through recovery programmes. It is recognised that exercise is good for the body and mind. Action Mental Health aim to work in close partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to encourage people to strive to keep themselves as active as possible, physically, mentally and socially while making use of the excellent Council recreational facilities.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “This is a fantastic project that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is extremely proud to support. Even though only walking was allowed, it was great to see how much fun everyone had over the four weeks. It is definitely something a lot of groups would enjoy and I would encourage any local community groups or charities to either St Colman’s Sports Complex to get involved in this brilliant initiative.”
