Culture Night 2018 at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre
The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre in Newry is proud to present a fantastic evening of free entertainment, as part of Culture Night 2018 celebrations on Friday 21 September 2018 from 5.30pm to 10.00pm.
Featuring a wonderful mix of crafts, dance, film, music, and spoken word the line-up will provide plenty of interest and intrigue for everyone. Wonderful Art Exhibitions from John Bannon and Joe Leigh Corrigan will be on display for the entire evening and participant classes will kick off at 5.30pm with a free ceramic workshop to learn the art of ceramic art and pottery with our expert ceramicist Amy Mackle. Places are limited so make sure to be early to secure a place. At 7.00pm come and enjoy a fun dance workshop with Ripton Lindsay who will show you the moves and have you dancing to the rythums of Carribbean, Hip-Hop and Reggae music.
At 8.00pm the evening continues with ‘A Night of Communication Through the Arts’ featuring artists such as;
Whiskey for Breakfast - The folk group from Rathfriland called ‘Whiskey before Breakfast’ play both Irish and Scottish ballads. Sheila Smyth and the Changemakers - Sheila Smyth is a composer, musician and social entrepreneur. ‘Changemakers’, is a group of inspirational and talented people who are on a recovery journey. Their music is both victorious and deeply moving.
The exceptionally talented Storyteller and Visual Artist Steve Lally, has been working for over fifteen years in the arts. Writing his own material as well as re-imagining folk tales, myths, legends and story songs ranging from ancient Celtic epics of Ireland and beyond of adventure and romance.
A Media Screening Exhibition by Richard Kelly is also on display, however please note that this exhibition will require parental guidance. Originally from County Mayo, but now living in Co Down, Richard has been working for over twenty years as an artist using mixed mediums such as; oil, acrylic on canvas and specialist in graphite work. The style of art, more commonly known as ‘outsiders art’ is primarily conceptual surrealism work inspired by past masters such as Rubens, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Raphael whilst looking at cultural influences of years gone by.
Brick Smith, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Lisburn, will also be showcasing his art and has recently began work as a solo artist after spending most of his life in various bands. His music is influenced from artists such as; Tom Waits, Laura Marling, Paul Simon, Nick Cave and Jeff Buckley.
Bringing the evening to a close will be a creative ‘Jam Finale’ where all acts, artists and visitors will come together and create a wonderful fusion of spontaneous art to promote and embrace what Culture Night is all about.
