Cuan Mhuire Celebrates Fiftieth Anniversary

On Wednesday 18 May, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane hosted a reception in the Carroll Gallery at Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry to celebrate the 50 years since the establishment of Cuan Mhuire.

Cuan Mhuire is Ireland’s largest provider of residential assessment and support for those suffering from addictions.  At any given time, Cuan Mhuire cares for approximately 600 residents providing some 50% of the residential addiction support in Ireland. 3,000 people are admitted annually for residential support and an open door policy operates on a 24 hour per day basis, 365 days of the year.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane said, “We are extremely fortunate to have one of Cuan Mhuire’s Support Centres located within Newry, one of the five Support Centres throughout Ireland where all faiths and cultures are welcomed and valued. These Centres, including Newry, could not survive without the help and support of dedicated volunteers who assist the diverse and highly qualified staff. The Council applauds each and every one of you. We are indebted to you for your professionalism, kindness and humanity.” 

Councillor Ruane continued, “I would like to pay tribute to the work of Sister Consilio, the founder and guardian of Cuan Mhuire. You have been the instrument of positive change for many people; your work has saved lives and transformed outcomes, not only for those who benefitted from your services, but also for their families and friends. You are the epitome of a woman who truly has made a difference through your life’s work. To all of the Cuan Mhuire family gathered this evening, I extend a massive thank you on behalf of the Council.”
