County Down Golf Classic Goes from Strength to Strength
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, working in partnership with Ardglass Golf Club, were delighted to welcome local and international golfers to play in the County Down Golf Classic from Sunday 9 to Tuesday 11 October. This key event in the golfing calendar offers golfers the chance to play on three of the area’s finest courses; Ardglass Golf Course, St. Patrick’s Golf Course, Downpatrick and the World Number One Championship Course, Royal County Down, Newcastle!
Golfers enjoyed a welcome reception at Denvir’s Coaching Inn, Downpatrick where they sampled the finest local produce and were entertained by traditional music from 'Clann Uí hUiginn'.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “We work closely with golfing partners on a worldwide basis to promote and showcase the amazing golf courses within our district as tourism destinations. We are proud to host the County Down Golf Classic which attracts a high calibre of both national and international players.”
Cllr Savage continued, “This tournament tests the skills of all the golfers taking part, challenging them to navigate their way around tight fairways and greens that are not always forgiving! I would like to thank Paul Vaughan and his team at the Ardglass Golf Club and Jonathan Lennon at NI Golf Tours for organising this event.”
The tournament scores, aggregated over the three days, were excellent with Northern Ireland’s golfing sensation Chris Higgins throwing down the gauntlet to the other contenders by picking up first prize in the competition with 96 points, followed closely by Mick Seaby from England who was awarded second place with 95 points. Third place went to John Wilson from USA on 94 points, Edmond Sterling from England secured fourth place with 92 points and Mark Caroll from ROI secured fifth place with 89 points.
