Councillor Kathryn Owen appointed Newry, Mourne and Down Veterans’ Champion
A Veteran’s Champion has been appointed in each of Northern Ireland’s eleven Council areas, and Councillor Kathryn Owen is the nominated Veterans’ Champion for Newry, Mourne and Down.
As the local Veterans’ Champion, Councillor Owen has a good knowledge of local services and is a first point of contact for veterans who need information, signposting, or referral to the VSO. She can also identify and advise local charities or Community Interest Companies who may be eligible to apply for funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.
Welcoming her appointment, Councillor Owen said, “The Northern Ireland Veterans’ Support Office is a trusted point of contact for Veterans whose needs are not being met. As a RAF veteran who has served at home and overseas, I am honoured to have been appointed as my Council area’s Veterans’ Champion and am delighted to have this opportunity to directly support their work with our Armed Forces Veterans and the families, carers and widows or widowers of Veterans.”
The Veterans’ Support Office (VSO) was established to ensure that Veterans living in Northern Ireland do not experience disadvantage. The work of the VSO supports Veterans and the families, carers and widows or widowers of Veterans.
