Council Thanks Community Group Volunteers
Members from local community groups arrived at Killeavy Castle on Sunday 4 June for a very special afternoon tea.
The day was organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council as a thank you for all the hard work community volunteers do to help manage community facilities throughout the district.
The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering. To show its appreciation, the Council took time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and highlight all that they contribute to our local communities.
The afternoon was compered by Radio Ulster’s much loved, ‘Wee Man from Strabane’ Hugo Duncan and special awards were presented by the former Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Michael Savage, to those who have demonstrated outstanding service to the community.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Savage said, “We as resident’s are indebted to all our volunteers who take time away from their own busy lives to support the delivery of some of our vital community services.
“These volunteers are at the heart of the community and know more than anyone what the needs and challenges are within their own areas and are best placed to find solutions to address them. We want to support our volunteers so that they can do their job effectively as they work with us to deliver high quality community facilities. These partnership opportunities empower local people to effect change and I would like to thank them for all they do.”
