Council Responds to Cost of Living Crisis with Keeping Warm and Well Events
As part of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s ongoing work to support its citizens during the current cost of living crisis, two Keeping Warm and Well events will be held during January in both Newry City and Downpatrick.
The Keeping Warm and Well events will be held in Newry Leisure Centre on Monday 23 January from 9am-2pm and Downpatrick Arts Centre on Monday 30 January from 9.30am-2pm. These will coincide with that week’s Newry and Downpatrick Open House sessions where Council buildings are opened to provide a warm welcoming space.
The events will provide information on energy efficiency, home safety and access to benefits from agencies such as the Housing Executive’s NI Energy Advice Service, the Consumer Council, South East Trust and Southern Trust, Community Advice, and the Council’s Affordable Warmth and Home Safety teams.
Talking about the initiative, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “Our district should be a place where everyone has the chance of a decent and secure life. Instead, too many people – many from working families – are struggling to meet their needs.
“We are using the limited funding available to us to do everything we can to continue to support our residents. The Keeping Warm and Well events will provide advice and support on a number of different topics, like food, energy and bills, money and debt and health and wellbeing. This is a great opportunity to get valuable help on how to best cope in these difficult times.
“Events will also coincide with Newry and Downpatrick’s Open House days. Whether you just want to meet up out of the cold and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or are looking for information on what help is available for you, everyone will find a warm welcome.”
