Council Recognises Work of Community Groups
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council welcomed community groups from across the district to an awards ceremony held in Newcastle, on Sunday 9 June.
The event was organised to thank the groups and show appreciation for all the work that they do in managing community centres throughout the district.
Facilities and volunteers received awards from UTV presenter, Pamela Ballantine for the services provided within their communities. Community groups attending also took the opportunity to share information and experiences.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Terry Andrews, who spoke at the event in McCann’s Bar, said: “I am delighted to be here at our second annual ‘Volunteer Thank You Event’ to recognise the hard work that community groups carry out in partnership with the Council. I also would like to congratulate all those who have received awards today for their hard work throughout the year.
“Community groups play a vital role in our Council as they work with us to deliver high quality community facilities. We are committed to building capacity to empower local people to effect change within their own communities. None of this would be possible without the work that the community groups and their volunteers carry out, day in, day out, year after year.”
