Council Hosts Anniversary Celebrations for Crossgar and Killyleagh Summer Leagues
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Terry Andrews hosted a civic reception on 10 January 2020 in the Downshire Civic Centre to mark the 50th anniversary of Crossgar Youth League and the 40th anniversary of Killyleagh Summer League.
Crossgar Youth League was established in 1969 in the Westlands Estate, Crossgar and Killyleagh Summer league was founded in 1979. Both leagues have come a long way since then, becoming the focal point for children to play football over the summer holidays.
Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Andrews said, “Congratulations to Crossgar Youth League and Killyleagh Summer League on their milestones anniversaries. Thank you to all who have been involved in sustaining both leagues over the years.
“There is no doubt that both have hard working committees who are vital to small communities such as Crossgar and Killyleagh. I am sure with their continued dedication and commitment, they will continue to grow and improve and achieve yet more sporting success for many years to come.”
Councillor Andrews continued, “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is delighted to be associated with both leagues and is indebted to their committees for promoting sport within the district. One of the Council’s strategic objectives is to improve the health and wellbeing of its residents. It is continuing with its programme of delivering first class leisure and sporting provision throughout this district, which will in turn assist with the development of outstanding sporting talent, such as can be found in Crossgar and Killyleagh.”
