Council Congratulates Winners of the Schools’ Household Recycling Centre Competition
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey welcomed prize winners of the Schools’ Household Recycling Competition to a reception at the Downshire Civic Centre, Downpatrick on Friday 6 December.
The competition was open to all primary schools in the Downpatrick District Electoral Area (DEA) to celebrate the opening of Downpatrick Household Recycling Centre (HRC) in October. In order to be in with a chance to win a new Fitbit Ace or Kinder E-reader, the children were invited to complete a ‘quiz trail’ around the new HRC site.
Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey said, “We had a fantastic response to this competition and many thanks to all the children who took part and to our sponsors, European Recycling Platform (ERP UK) - the Council’s partner for the collection and recycling of batteries and waste electrical equipment. The ‘Recycling Quiz Trail’ was a great way to engage and educate young people about the importance of recycling.
“The new HRC in Downpatrick has been designed to make recycling quick and easy for all its users, as a Council we aim to recycle 75% of all the waste received at this new facility. We ask all visitors to the centre to pre-sort their waste for recycling at home as recyclable material is not allowed to be placed in the general waste containers.”
The winners of the Household Recycling Schools Competition are:
Orán Byrne Convery from St Joseph’s PS, Ballycruttle
Lucy Halpin from St Patrick’s PS, Saul
Emily Mc Quoid from Downpatrick Primary School and
James Moreland from St Mary’s PS, Dunsford
