Council Composting Call
Residents from the Newry, Mourne and Down area can celebrate Compost Awareness Week (4th – 9th May 2015) by getting involved with the Council’s FREE Compost Giveaway.
Green fingered residents can collect one bag of compost at the ‘giveaway’ events on Saturday 2nd May at the 7 Household Recycling Centres (HRC’s) in Crossmaglen, Newtownhamilton, Camlough, Newry, Hilltown, Warrenpoint and Kilkeel.
The compost is distributed on a first come, first served basis, so get there early to avoid disappointment.
Supplied by Natural World Products, the compost is made from garden waste recycled at the HRC’S and the contents of the brown bin collected from Newry, Mourne and Down households. Last year over 6000t of biodegradable waste was diverted from landfill.
Canice O’Rourke, Director of Regulatory and Technical Services said: “Building on the success of previous giveaways, we are taking this opportunity to give something back to residents for their efforts in separating their kitchen and garden waste for composting. We would encourage more residents to recycle their kitchen and garden waste and reduce the amount of bio-degradable waste that goes to landfill.”
Compost Awareness Week from 4 to 9 May aims to promote the benefits of home composting and the great results that can be achieved by using composts containing recycled material.
