Council Chairperson Supports Groups Championing Inclusion and Diversity
During December, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, has been visiting a number of remarkable local organisations that work to promote inclusion and diversity within our communities.
The purpose of these visits was not only to shine a spotlight on the incredible work they do but to present them with a donation to help support their essential services.
These groups play a pivotal role in fostering connections and enhancing wellbeing through community driven projects that create opportunities for interaction, participation and wellbeing. Their efforts bring residents together ensuring that everyone feels supported and valued.
Speaking about their impact, Councillor Byrne said, “I am delighted to support these incredible groups as they continue to deliver their invaluable services and support to so many people.
Their tireless work makes a difference to the lives of residents across the length and breadth of Newry, Mourne and Down. These champions of inclusion and diversity enrich lives and, in many cases, quite literally provide a lifeline to those in need.”
Green Spaces Community Growing Project creates a welcoming space where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can participate in creative nature-based health and wellbeing activities. Chairperson Councillor Pete Byrne enjoyed a cup of biodegradable tea, home-made wheaten bread with cheese and home-made chutney during his visit.
Dramability is a mixed ability drama group providing classes, theatre trips, summer schemes and residentials for children, working closely with local schools and playgroups to provide workshops and presentations on the themes of difference and inclusion. The group's cast members were joined by our Chairperson as they set the scene for their latest stage show.
Shimna Stars Special Olympics Club offers support, sport, recreation, social interaction and learning to those with an intellectual disability. Meeting with club members and volunteers, our Chairperson enjoyed their festive celebrations.
Our Chairperson enjoyed meeting and chatting with members and volunteers of TAG The Active Group which provides young adults affected by mild to moderate learning disability with opportunities to develop their full potential.
Down Right Brilliant provides people with Down Syndrome and their families with opportunities to enhance speech, communication, numeracy skills through the provision of a youth club, speech and drama classes and more. Our Chairperson talked to members and volunteers while joining in with their seasonal festivities.
Amazing Abilities provides a meeting space for children with additional needs and their families, to enable them to enjoy recreational activities and engage with knowledgeable and supportive volunteers. While getting festive with members, our Chairperson enjoyed talking to volunteers about the group's activities.
Cuan Mhuire has been selected as the Chairperson’s Chosen Charity during his year in office. The work they do to help individuals and families struggling with addiction is life changing. Our Chairperson expressed his appreciation to their volunteers for their invaluable work and chatted to members as they looked forward to Christmas.
