Council Chairperson Reflects on Newry, Mourne and Down’s Community Spirit and Encourages Residents to Shop Local
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte reflects on the remarkable community spirit that is present throughout Newry, Mourne and Down in her Christmas message.
“When I took up my position as Chairperson in June, I spoke about ‘Community’ being at the heart of everything I would do throughout my year in office. And as we approach Christmas and the start of a New Year, I want to reflect on the remarkable community spirit I have had the privilege of seeing at first hand.
“There is a warm, generous and compassionate community spirit evident in the people I meet, and I know many of them will be playing a part this Christmas to make life easier for their own communities. I would also like to extend my own gratitude to those working over the holiday period and those giving their time to help the homeless.
“Again, my thanks go to all those individuals, charitable, community and voluntary organisations who work across the district all to improve the quality of life for our residents all year round.
“I am aware this year will be a particularly difficult one for our residents impacted by the recent flooding emergency. And my thoughts are very much with the businesses who have been working so hard to pick up the pieces and reopen. However, what our businesses have achieved in such a short period of time with community support is incredible and gives me such hope.
“As we step into the Christmas season, I encourage each and every one of you to come out, to visit, to eat and to shop locally, championing your local businesses.
“To support our businesses and residents in the long-term, we are also continuing as a Council to deliver our ambitious, transformational projects across the district and are committed to regenerating our City, towns and villages to create and sustain new jobs and increase visitors to our area.
“I am only too aware of the many challenges we will face during 2024, but if the community spirit, determination and generosity shown by so many this year is anything to go by, then I am confident that the residents of Newry, Mourne and Down will become stronger and more resilient together.
“As we prepare to welcome 2024, on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council I would like to wish each and every one of you a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
