Council Chairperson Acknowledges Charitable, Community and Voluntary organisations in his Christmas Message
In his Christmas message, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, has highlighted what a privilege it has been to meet some of the district’s unsung heroes from charitable, voluntary and community organisations.
Councillor Byrne said, “As we approach Christmas and move into the New Year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the amazing people I have met this year across our district.”
“As Council Chairperson, I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand the many charitable, community and voluntary organisations working to improve the quality of life for our residents. It is an honour to support and shine a light on their work and I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you working with such great organisations.
“When I took up the post in June, I spoke about the particular importance of supporting marginalised and vulnerable communities and being a champion of inclusion and diversity. It has therefore been a privilege to support groups ranging from Dramability in Downpatrick to Amazing Abilities in Slieve Gullion, which provide safe, fun filled and stimulating environments for young people of all abilities. And for adults, initiatives such as the Green Spaces Community Growing Project in Warrenpoint and the various Men’s Shed projects across our entire district that create welcoming spaces and promote health and wellbeing, have also been an inspiration.
“The charity that I have chosen to support during my year in office is, Cuan Mhuire. The work they do to help individuals and families struggling with addiction is life-changing and in some circumstances lifesaving. I was therefore delighted to meet volunteers just last week at a special Christmas event.
“My gratitude also goes to all those working over the holiday period and those giving their time to help the elderly, the sick and the vulnerable. These people are putting the lives of others in front of their own every day, especially during the festival season.
Speaking about the important part local businesses play within our community, Chairperson Cllr Pete Byrne said, “Our local businesses are the driver of economic growth within our district. Small business owners are our neighbours and our friends and I would like to thank them for their commitment to creating sustainable and vibrant town centres, which are at the heart of our communities.
“As a Council, we are dedicated to providing long term support to our local businesses by driving forward ambitious, transformational projects across the district over the coming years. We remain committed to revitalising our City, towns and villages to foster job creation and attract more visitors.
He continued, “It is widely recognised that experiences and events also assist in creating a vibrant and growing district, and this year we have once again enjoyed a packed calendar of events. Our incredible Giant Adventures festivals, the Amgen Irish Open and everything in between, has helped to promote our fantastic tourism offering and attract a large number of visitors whose spending has helped to support our businesses and boost the economy.
“At this time of year, it’s so important to continue to support our wide range of shops, restaurants and services. I encourage everyone to embrace the spirit of community and shop local, both in-person and online. Celebrate the season in local restaurants, cafés and bars, and champion your local businesses. I am so proud of everything Newry, Mourne and Down has to offer. Let’s make this Christmas special by making it local!”
“As we prepare to welcome 2025, on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council I wish each and every one of you a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Together, we can create a thriving environment that benefits us all and ensures that our district remains a great place to live, work and visit.”
