Council Chairman Hosts Loughinisland and Seaforde Bowling Champions
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin has highlighted the achievements of Loughinisland and Seaforde Bowling Clubs at a reception in the Downshire Civic Centre.
Speaking at the event, Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “Both teams should be very proud of their recent sporting successes. I want to congratulate Seaforde Indoor Bowling Club for achieving the double in Division One by winning the league and the cup. You have had a record-breaking year, achieving over 100 points in the season. This is something you should be extremely proud of.
“I am also pleased to mark Loughinisland Bowling Club’s success in achieving the same in Division Two. After being runner-up for most of the season, the team finally eclipsed local rivals Teconnaught to win the cup title.
“The indoor bowls teams deserve recognition for the vital contribution they make to the local community, with their inclusive yet competitive nature. Age is no barrier to joining. This evening I know we are joined by two members, one of whom is 11 years old and the other 90 years old. This really is a team sport for the entire family, and an extremely competitive one at that.”
Councillor Murnin also drew attention to the Council’s objective of supporting improved health and wellbeing outcomes. He said, “Delivering on this objective could not be achieved without sports clubs, such as the bowling teams, to develop and deliver sporting experiences, so that our citizens can enjoy an active lifestyle, competing in whichever type of sport suits their personality.”
“We feel it is important that we acknowledge the high level of sporting performance and achievements of our local sports teams and I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all who participated in this most recent tournament. You should all be very proud of your performances in the sporting field of indoor bowls.”
