Council Announce Improvement Works for Monkshill and Kilbroney Cemeteries
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has unveiled recently completed improvement works to Monkshill and Kilbroney Municipal Cemeteries within the district.
Monkshill Municipal Cemetery in Newry was originally developed in the 1970’s with the Chapel of Ease being constructed in the following decade. The Council extended the cemetery to include the provision of 622 additional burial plots and has also provided a dedicated burial section for members of the Islamic community.
Other works included at the cemetery included new surfaced carriageways, footways for visitors and new parking bays with additional disabled parking provision plus upgraded LED street lighting. There has also been extensive landscaping at the cemetery which included tree planting, wild flowering areas and the provision of a bee habitat to enhance biodiversity.
There have also been improvement works at Kilbroney Cemetery, Rostrevor that included the provision of an additional 200 burial plots. The Council also installed a number of concrete plinths for the erection of headstones at cemetery plots. Improvements for access to the site from the roadway have also been completed along with the provision of additional disabled parking bays.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said, “The improvement works have resulted in enriched aesthetics and practical improvements for visitors to both these peaceful sites, which means so much for families and friends who visit these places of rest in the Kilbroney and Monkshill areas.”
