Closing the Gate on Rural Crime
Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) is teaming up with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and other agencies to deliver key crime prevention information to farmers and rural dwellers on Saturday 30 September 2017 from 10am -4pm in SAFE, Camlough.
‘Closing the Gate on Rural Crime’ will host a variety of information stalls providing useful tips on crime prevention, such as Home Secure, Guardcams, trailer marking, Farmwatch, property marking and a freezebranding demo on local livestock. Stalls will also feature health and safety aspects of staying safe on farms with inputs from Slurry safety, Farm Families and the Man Alive cancer research project as well as bespoke Jumping Clay workshops for children with a special rural theme.
PCSP Chairman Councillr Harry Harvey stated, “Crime affecting rural communities can have a knock-on effect on all of us. This event promotes awareness of the signs of rural crime and encourages the public to report either to PSNI or to Crimestoppers. Rural crime has a significant impact on victims, and the economic losses caused by theft of property can have far reaching consequences for individuals, businesses and the economy. The overall cost to the UK economy in 2016 was £39.2 million .”
PSNI Inspector Lynne Corbett said, “It is important that we all work together to make the countryside safer for everyone. Preventing crime and being switched on to crime prevention will help to protect your community and a farmer’s livelihood. Don't make life easy for the criminals. Reporting promptly to the police any activity that raises your suspicions is a good way to initiate an investigation and will help to deter criminals and reduce crime in your area. We are pleased to be working with the PCSP to raise awareness and spread the crime prevention message.”
