Chairperson Supports Local Charities
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte has announced the names of the charities that she will support during her term in office.
The charities: Down Right Brilliant, Life Changes Changes Lives, Newry All Stars Special Olympic Club, Sound Friends and Well Lane Warriors, represent a diverse range of causes. Their significant contribution transforms the lives of many individuals and families in the heart of our community.
At this time, all five charities share the same challenges – reduced funding and a lack of volunteers - both of which continues to impact on their ability to deliver their range of support services.
Meeting with each of the Charity representatives, Chairperson Cllr Harte said, “I am a strong advocate for disability. I believe that everyone deserves equal opportunities and access to resources and have mirrored this by selecting charities from across the district that provide vital support and outlets for individuals and families of those with disabilities.
“Each of my chosen charities and their volunteers work tirelessly all year round, always going the extra mile to assist those who are most in need. I am truly humbled by the work that they do and am delighted to provide my full support to help raise awareness of each of their causes during my year in office.”
Down Right Brilliant, is a parent lead charity, dedicated to providing a wide range of activities and opportunities for people with Down Syndrome and their families. Their impactful programmes enhance speech, communication and numeracy skills, and also has a strong focus on social, emotional and physical wellbeing through the provision of a weekly youth club, speech and drama classes and much more. The Charity’s focus also extends to family members, creating a supportive community through monthly meetings, wellbeing days and much more.
Down Right Brilliant Chairperson, Caroline Digney said, “We are delighted to be part of the Chairperson’s Chosen Charities, working with Councillor Valerie Harte to foster inclusion and
support our members in reaching their full potential. With your help we look forward to more opportunities to grow, the recruitment of volunteers and opportunities for funding to continue the invaluable work for our members and families.”
Newry All Stars Special Olympic Club, led by Bernard Robb is a testament to the power of team sports. Founded exclusively for children with learning difficulties, this club provides a safe and inclusive space for children to enjoy weekly sports training in basketball, golf, equestrian and ten pin bowling.
The club is managed by teams of volunteers who help children to grow and develop in their chosen sports, with some going on to perform at regional, national and international events. The overarching theme of the club is inclusivity, where everyone regardless of ability is welcome. Children not only develop physical fitness and athletic skills but also build lasting friendships and gain a sense of belonging.
Newry All Stars Special Olympic Club Chairperson, Bernard Robb said, “We want to continue to make a positive impact within the community which is why being selected to be part of the Chairperson’s Chosen Charities will help us make a real difference in the lives of our young people. If you want to get involved, please reach out as there are many ways to start the process of becoming a volunteer.”
Sound Friends welcomes and supports d/Deaf children and their families in our local area. The charity provides peer support, and arranges outings for D/deaf children, their siblings and parents. They offer practical advice on issues such as tips on communication methods, the use of assistive technology and educational needs.
Sound Friends Chairperson, Nataliia Buchanan said, “We are committed to supporting local D/deaf children and their families. As a collective voice, we will continue to advocate for equality of access to local facilities and the promotion of inclusion for all our D/deaf children by working closely with service providers. We are very grateful to be nominated as one of the Chairpersons Chosen Charities, which will help raise awareness of the work we do.”
Life Changes Changes Lives (LCCL), focuses on supporting individuals affected by mental ill health and addiction. Through creative therapy, counselling and a social enterprise shop selling upcycled products, LCCL strives to improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing of its members. Talking therapy, confidential counselling and a supportive environment are at the core of LCCL’s services, contributing to positive life changes for approximately 200 people annually.
Life Changes Changes Lives, Manus Teague said, “We are grateful to everyone that has donated to us as they enable us to provide support to many vulnerable people in this area.
Being nominated as one of Councillor Harte’s chosen charities is an honour as any funds raised during the Chairperson’s year in office will mean we will be able to extend our reach within the local community to assist even more people.”
Well Lane Warriors was founded by Jessica McMahon and Vincent Doran in 2021. It is a football club set up exclusively for young people who have additional needs. The club provides an inclusive environment for them to experience the fun of team sports.
Well Lane Warriors Chairperson, Jessica McMahon said, “We are overwhelmed to be chosen as one of the Chairperson’s Chosen Charities and will continue to work tirelessly to promote equality of opportunity and diversity to children with complex needs.”
Chairperson Cllr Valerie Harte concluded by saying, “The charities advocate and provide a voice to those in our society who struggle with physical and mental health issues each and every day. They provide direct help, give information and raise awareness of issues.
“I want to utilise my time in office to raise awareness of the problems they face as well as the excellent work they do. I am asking everyone to get behind these incredible organisations and offer what you can either by volunteering your time or contributing to my fundraising events.”
