Chairperson Hosts Reception for Student Councils
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick welcomed representatives from school councils from De La Salle High School, Blackwater Intergrated College and St Mary’s High School to a reception in the Boardroom, Downshire Civic Centre, Downpatrick.
This was final trip in a series of visits for the School Councils which also included Westminster and Stormont. The pupils and teachers had an opportunity to discuss democracy in the local area and undertook a question and answer session with the Chairperson. The interesting and informative session allowed the students to learn how discussions and debates operate in the Council.
Councillor Fitzpatrick said, “Today was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to learn about the various Departments within the Council. The event gave them an opportunity to experience first- hand how the work of the Council shapes their local Communities. I would urge all of the pupils to continue to work hard and enjoy being a part of school life. Each and every one of them has their own individual talents, and I have no doubt they will continue to grow and contribute greatly to the Newry, Mourne and Down District”.
