Chairperson Councillor Casey Welcomes Maidens of the Mournes
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey welcomed the Maidens of the Mournes to Newry and Mourne Museum, Newry on Tuesday 13 August. The maidens were treated to a tour of the museum followed by a reception hosted by the Chairperson.
The international festival, which began in 1989 and is held in Warrenpoint, offers a week-long celebration. The events, which take place between 11 and 18 August, include a Fair Day on the opening day, with fireworks, open air music performances and children’s entertainment throughout the week—culminating with the crowning of the Maiden of the Mournes on Saturday 17 August.
Speaking at the reception, Chairperson Councillor Casey said, “I am delighted to welcome this year’s Maidens to Newry. It is a fantastic achievement to have been chosen to represent your respective areas and I cannot wait to hear more about what led you to be here today.
“Although I am sure each and every one of you deserves this title, whoever is the fortunate maiden to be selected ‘Maiden of the Mournes’ at the end of the week, will enjoy a very special year.
“I would also like to congratulate the organising committee, not only for putting together another great programme of events which will appeal to all ages, but also for seeing the success of the festival through to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. The Council is indebted to your efforts to attract visitors from all over the world to this exciting festival.
“One of the Council’s strategic objectives is to promote the Newry, Mourne and Down district as a premier tourism destination on the island of Ireland and community run festivals, such as Maidens of the Mournes, play an important role in helping us to achieve this objective. We are delighted to be associated with this wonderful festival.
“I have no doubt you will enjoy the hospitality of the Newry, Mourne and Down people, and have a very memorable week.”
